lilac, green and yellow atmospheric abstract painting

“Lilac”. Acrylic paint on canvas. 20″ x 24″.

“I keep on making what I can’t do yet in order to learn to be able to do it.”

Vincent Van Gogh. From Heiligman, Vincent and Theo. p. 211.

Often, I am unhappy with the result of my painting. I try to see my “bad” artwork as a learning experience and press on regardless of the outcome. That is the struggle of art: to do the work in the face of doubt and the absence of support. In the end, the quality of a work of art is subjective to the viewer and I remind myself that popularity does not equate to quality. At the deepest level, I paint because God made me to be a painter and I believe he is pleased with my efforts.

I don’t think this painting is about anything, other than the enjoyment of color and light. God, of course, is the supreme painter of color and light. At all times, somewhere around the globe, he uses the sun to paint a sunrise and a sunset. At the same time, deep in space he is painting glorious pictures with entire galaxies.
